Ukraine is on fire

by Андрій Білецький / April 14, 2020 22:20 / Published in Andriy Biletsky, Blogs

The fire destroyed animals, birds, plants and other unique ecosystems in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Authorities blame the peasants who set dry grass on fire. The real cause of the fire is corruption and neglect of the authorities.

During the two weeks of the fire in the Chernobyl zone, thousands of hectares of forest have been burned out, as well as a closed military camp, 12 villages and sanatoriums. The caesium-137 concentration in the air over Kyiv was recorded.

This is the first such large-scale accident in the Chernobyl region in 34 years since the disaster. Villages, a military camp and sanatoriums in the exclusion zone withstood the chaos of the 90s. They withstood during the two revolutions, when the authorities washed their hands and fled the country. They withstood in the active phase of the war, when the level of sabotage against such objects was as high as ever. But unique animals and unique objects did not survive the spring of 2020, when the disorder and corruption reached the critical point.

They loot and set their traces on fire not the first time. But now it has reached industrial levels, also because of snowless winter and lack of precipitation. The tree crowns are set on fire on purpose, the technology has been worked out. This time the situation got out of control.

Foresters are usually aware of this. And, obviously, are cut in on the profits, as well as the police. Big questions to the State Agency for Management of the Exclusion Zone, which, knowing everything, did NOT sound the alarm.

A disaster in a zone like the current one was a matter of time. Because everyone doesn’t care. Everyone is trying to loot, and it has nothing to do with peasant who admitted to the police in arson of the dry grass.

Last night thanks to the State Emergency Service we managed to take control of the fire in the Chernobyl zone. As far as I know, the rescuers have been working there without dosimeters. They save the country at the cost of their own health.

Dry and hot summer is ahead.

The whole country is burning, not only the territory around the Chernobyl zone. At night, Kyiv was under a flat canvas of smog haze. This is just the beginning.

It’s naive to hope only for the weather and the heroism of rescuers. Due to the corruption and nepotism, we can expect new disasters any time soon.

Zelensky urged not to set dry grass on fire and warned to raise fines. That’s right, but the peasant will not pay so much, and the thief has already paid to everyone who closes their eyes to deforestation and arson of the forest.
