The exchange of prisoners is a crucial operation that should return prisoners of war to Ukraine. However, the latest lists included, in particular, so-called “L/DNR” terrorists, criminals and random people. The Ukrainian side agrees to accept all those who are betrayed by the militants. Often among these “all” there are real terrorists or dubious characters who cooperated with the enemy.
There is no universal formula for what makes one Ukrainian better or worse than another, said Oleksiy Reznikov, the Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine. The authorities do not deny the fact that they “liberate” all Ukrainian citizens who are forcibly detained by terrorists. Officials tell the relatives of the still unreleased prisoners that they help everyone who turns to them. Thus, in the list for exchange in 2019, Girkin’s accomplice was “liberated” from terrorists. It is known that this “prisoner” took part in the “Russian spring” in Donetsk.
We see that for Zelensky and his team such exchanges are a matter of pride, but we must also understand the threat of “liberation” of all in a row. This indicates the incompetence of those responsible for the exchange of domestic authorities or their corruption, as there were rumors in the information space about trade in places on the exchange list by Yermak and other officials.
Many Ukrainian prisoners of war remain trapped and are not included in exchange lists. Instead, Ukraine gives the militants real criminals: ex-Berkuts, traitors and terrorists. The number of criminals that Ukraine can extradite is not unlimited, so this recklessness or indifference of the authorities may leave Ukrainians who really remain prisoners without a chance to return home.
