The battles for Ilovaisk lasted from August 6 to September 3, 2014. On August 18, during fierce fighting, the Ukrainian military entered Ilovaisk. They were able to take control of part of the city, but after a significant force of regular Russian troops on August 23-24 in the rear, the Ilovaysk group was surrounded.
On the night of August 29, Russian President Volodymyr Putin called on the militants to open a humanitarian corridor for the besieged Ukrainian military. At 8:15 a.m., the Ukrainian military began moving out of the city in organized columns. However, during the exit, the columns were insidiously shot by the enemy.
Officially, during the battles for Ilovaisk, 366 Ukrainian servicemen were killed, 158 went missing, 429 were wounded, and 128 were taken prisoner.
On Saturday, August 29, a commemorative event will take place in Berdyansk to mark the anniversary of the Ilovaisk tragedy.
