After so many years, there were almost no Ukrainians left who would remember the events of World War II. We are accustomed to honor the veterans who fought for the USSR, recently began to honor the UPA fighters. But 34 thousand Ukrainians remained unjustly forgotten, who fought on the side of the Germans in that war, in particular, in the fourteen grenadier division “Galicia”. 76 years ago, it took her first fight.
On July 13, 1944, the Battle of Brody began, a large-scale battle in which the first Ukrainian front launched an offensive on the fourth Wehrmacht army. In this battle, Ukrainians also participated in the Galicia division. Previously, they underwent manual training, so they were perfectly prepared for the battle. The battle lasted 9 days and ended with the defeat of the Germans. In this fight, the Ukrainian military showed their best side: their level of training, motivation and courage was so dominated by German that after the defeat, it was decided to reform the division.
For the fighters, this was the first serious combat experience, which they then needed. Many of those who left Brody joined the UPA and continued the underground struggle against the Soviet occupier. The memory of Ukrainian heroes will live as long as we remember them.
