As at April 10, 2203 coronavirus cases were confirmed, 69 people died in Ukraine. The nation united to combat the disease. Authorities have announced quarantine measures. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church supported the quarantine by refusing worship at the time of the pandemic.
At the same time, the priests of the Moscow Patriarchate urge believers to ignore restrictive measures and continue to visit churches, despite the danger of getting infected with COVID-19 and dying.
March 13 the Deputy Abbot of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Metropolitan Pavlo (Lebed) posted a video urging citizens to go to churches with children and elderly despite the quarantine, and declaring that he won’t let anyone to close the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and cancel religious processions.
As a result, 26 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The number of infected can be significantly larger, which can only be determined through a special investigation and mass testing.
The National Corps believes that the actions the Deputy Abbot of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Metropolitan Pavlo led to grave consequences.
This is Zelensky’s failure. The authorities showed that it was not only unable to cope with the serious challenges facing Ukraine, but simply could not deal with church representatives, who violate all government orders and endanger the life and health of citizens. Instead of taking tough measures and forcing Metropolitan Pavlo to comply with the law, the authorities prejudice the rights of veterans and volunteers. Easter holidays are ahead, in case of further violation of quarantine measures by priests of the Moscow Patriarchate the number of coronavirus infected may increase.
The National Corps calls on the National Police to open criminal proceedings under Art. 325 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of sanitary rules and norms for the prevention of infectious diseases and mass poisoning), establish a list of people who got infected after visiting the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, and inform the health care institution about such cases in order to provide emergency care. The authorities must urgently take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of similar crimes in Ukraine.
The National Corps calls on Ukrainians not to succumb to the provocations of the Moscow Patriarchate and to observe quarantine measures in order to preserve their life and health, as well as protect others from COVID-19.
