In Transcarpathia, they decided to form the Berehovo district with the majority of the Hungarian population. For decades, they traded to create a separate administrative unit in Transcarpathia. Zelensky’s government came to the aid of their Hungarian friends, without a shadow of a doubt sacrificing a piece of their territory.
And what in exchange? Bright headlines. “Breakthrough in relations with Hungary”, “President reconciled Ukraine with Hungary”. People will like it, right? This is what Zelensky needs. Exchange national interests for cheap PR.
